Yes, it's true. Plum Crazy Cake Company as it has been is coming to an end. We have enjoyed (mostly) every minute of this crazy adventure. Somehow through cake fails, late night/early morning baking and decorating, midnight dashes to the grocery store, and creating confectionery works of art, we have remained friends and would agree that we are better friends Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-92180280249002931772011-09-11T14:23:00.000-07:002011-09-18T13:39:44.768-07:00Celebrating "One"Much like always, this summer has been a crazy busy time for us. Rather than being a mellow relaxation into a pool of cool and languid lazyness, both Launa and Heather have kept us the constant activity that seems to characterize our lives as mom of young children.
While Heather had a family reunion out of state and other summer activities, Launa had a better reason for sleepless nights andPlum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-13625480690286306632011-07-05T22:26:00.000-07:002011-07-05T22:49:13.902-07:00Ovens, Swamp Coolers & Powdered SugarYes, those three things may not seem to go together at first glance, but the month of June was all about them for the gals at Plum Crazy Cake Company.
We've been utilizing one working oven at the kitchen we rent. While there are four total, three of them have had temperature issues - one in particular ping pongs up to 400 and back to 275, making it very hard to evenly bake a cake. It hardly seems possible that we're almost in June. The last post we wrote was in March!
We Plum Crazy gals have been just that. Between the two of us and our 7 children (and 1 in utero), two husbands and busy lives, I think we've been just trying to hold on. Three of Heather's children have birthdays Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-14766796607143855812011-04-11T12:47:00.000-07:002011-04-14T16:51:01.922-07:00The Madness of MarchMarch marks the six month point of the existence of Plum Crazy Cake Company. I'd say most days it feels like it's been longer than that -- but in a good way. We've done so many projects, filed so much paper, filled out so many forms, it seems like we've been operating for longer than July 2010.
At the same time, it's hard to believe we've been in business for half a year already. Although we Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-63842109508176613992011-03-20T20:31:00.000-07:002011-03-20T20:31:37.445-07:00Fabulous February...this is how we take a break! It hardly seems possible that it's 2011 already! And not only that, we're almost a quarter of the way through this year.
February ended up being a much-needed month of rest for the two of us, business-wise. We kept pretty busy (busier than our hubbies might have liked) through the Fall and Winter and it was nice to have a month without orders just to catch our collective breaths.
We did, Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-80494424388227539212011-03-19T19:57:00.000-07:002011-03-19T20:40:25.279-07:00Coasting into 2011Well, as you can tell, we fell off the face of the blogging earth. Add in 7 children between us, one surprise pregnancy (Launa, not Heather), Christmas, New Year's, 2 teacher husband's home for three weeks, and all the other stuff and you can understand why we've been MIA.
We've stayed busy though. In January, we did a cake for a friend's baby shower. We have had great success with our gourmet red velvet cupcakes and have received some high praise about their delectable flavor and texture. Our first foray with these little red gems was in November when we made Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-14630232143224395922010-12-14T19:05:00.000-08:002010-12-14T19:08:03.342-08:00The Learning Curve - Part 2So, as mentioned in Part 1 of our previous blog, The Learning Curve, on Thursday and Friday last week, we were down working on our projects for the week. While Heather worked on cake party stuff, Launa was busy creating our Mocha "Cuppa"-cakes -- an amazing idea that Launa came up with this summer when we did a trio of cakes for our good friends, The Whitfords (read about it here).

Time has truly flown by and we've learned so much about decorating cakes (Heather, in general; Launa, for profit) and running a small business in Fresno.
We started off the month with our first official wedding cake order. The bride and groom wanted a "Winter/Christmas wedding" theme. So, we Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-55323635877863300452010-11-18T14:45:00.000-08:002010-11-18T16:28:24.420-08:00We're Running Our Race! So, we mentioned in our last blog that we fell behind in posting....so this week you get the joy of TWO blog posts that should bring us up to date on the state of Plum Crazy Cake Company.
We've mentioned before that we have a little problem with taking on more than we should because we dream big and then have to execute things to make it happen. We never have a problem with ideas...what we lack Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-18187558083708885272010-11-14T19:21:00.000-08:002010-11-15T08:18:07.065-08:00Three Birthdays & A HolidayThe past month has been a whirlwind for the gals at Plum Crazy Cake Company. Between the two of us, we've had two children's birthday parties to plan (and cakes to make), one of our own birthdays to celebrate (and no, we didn't make that cake), one women's retreat to sing at, Halloween cupcakes to make and deliver to our kids' classrooms, and finally, quarterly taxes to file.
At long last Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-58763317867446505242010-10-05T13:27:00.000-07:002010-10-07T22:51:35.732-07:00Vultures & ButtercreamVultures and Buttercream aren't usually two things you would associate with each other, but this week they paired up nicely for us at Plum Crazy Cake Co.
Continuing on our busy streak from our last post about being "officially" official and doing a cake for a friend's baby shower, we followed up with our popular Minnie Mouse cake. This one was for little Emma and featured an added "eyelet Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-27761473003201261862010-09-18T20:59:00.000-07:002010-09-20T16:59:05.980-07:00Now It's Officially OfficialSo, even though we started Plum Crazy Cake Company in July and have been working like mad to get the business end up and running, and even though we've made several cakes for events, we had not yet made our first cake for profit.
Until this week.
For some reason, starting this particular cake with the knowledge that this one was the official first made us all the more focused -- and a little Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-68946142357767770432010-09-10T12:56:00.000-07:002010-09-10T13:16:18.895-07:00It's Business Time(For those of you who are Flight of the Conchords fans, you'll get that little nod.)
Ahhh...we've been able to catch our collective breaths after a furious few weeks (actually about 7) of working like mad to get Plum Crazy Cake Company up and running. While we'd say that we went into starting the business with realistic expectations as to the amount of time and energy it would take, I think we'dPlum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-22423847069590330912010-08-26T22:54:00.000-07:002010-08-28T09:58:11.056-07:00Our Humble BeginningsDuring a recent meeting, the two of us were flipping through Launa's photo albums of some of the cakes she's done over the years, as we thought about what we should include in our website's photo gallery. What was so striking, was the level of skill and mastery that Launa has achieved in a relatively short span of time. From Launa's very first cake in 2000 for her hubby's birthday --

After all, shouldn't everyone be able to eat and make cake?
To do this, we've worked on some ideas this week at Starbucks (because we do some of our best brainstorming there) that will bring a little something for everyone. Hopefully, you already know about our group classes that we offer. We survived our first full week in operation. It almost killed us, but we lived! You've already read about the chaos of making 50 miniature wedding cakes for a promotional event and tag-team family vacations. Now here's the rest of the story for the week...
Friday found Heather driving Launa's PT Cruiser (a.k.a. "The Cakemobile") down to our friends at Pro Signs to get aPlum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-61235503121080032222010-08-05T22:08:00.000-07:002010-08-23T09:52:30.125-07:00Getting By with a Little Help from Our FriendsWe're a little more than halfway through our marathon week and our feet are starting to feel the effects of our efforts!
This week has been filled with new things. On Monday, we had a lengthy meeting to get everything set up for what we needed to accomplish for the week. Tuesday, we started prepping for our petit fours for our Thursday night event and worked most of the day -- weathering fondantPlum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-57235434279773827682010-07-31T22:36:00.000-07:002010-07-31T22:38:45.400-07:00The Light at the End of the TunnelIt's been another busy week. We've worked hard on filing our necessary paperwork, approving our final logo design (and it's super amazing, we promise!) and business cards, setting up a phone system that meets our needs, and -- oh yes -- taking orders for cake!
We're thrilled that we have already had dates booked and we're just about ready to transition from starting up a new cake business, Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8700602989623014405.post-58060518782942246432010-07-24T22:48:00.000-07:002010-07-31T22:07:32.599-07:00Dreaming Big Pays ForwardSo, living the dream paid forward for co-owner, Launa's husband, Jeff, this last week. He now gets to drive around the PT Cruiser he's always dreamed of owning, and Plum Crazy Cake Co. now has a color-appropriate official delivery vehicle.
Hmm...now the other co-owner, Heather, is starting to worry about what dream her husband will want fulfilled that will "benefit the business." It took us a good two weeks to decide on our business name. And now that we've done that, there is a vast array of paperwork that must be filled out, filed and even published in a local newspaper (and who even reads those things anymore?) There's even more mind-numbing things Plum Crazy Cake Co.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14529596290486690644noreply@blogger.com0
